The four top tips you need to keep your summer body this autumn

Summer bodies are made in winter, right? But let's be honest, staying motivated to keep at your health and fitness goals once the cold front rolls in is hard.

As the temperature drops on the Gold Coast we should be dropping for 20 push-ups, but we’ll often find ourselves hitting the snooze button instead of bouncing out of bed like a gym bunny.

Don’t worry, you are not alone. Matt Mathie, owner and trainer at Surfers Paradise-based Wickedbodz Fitness Centre says he understands it’s harder to stay motivated in autumn when keeping your bikini body may not be as high up on your list of things to do.

“The biggest challenge for staying fit as the weather cools down is staying mentally motivated,” says Mark.

“For many people the main goal of staying fit is the summer body and when autumn approaches it’s easy to become complacent with training goals.”

Mark, who has over 20 years’ experience in the fitness industry has let us in on his top four tips for staying motivated during the cooler months on the Gold Coast.

  1. Find your ‘why’. Have a serious think about why you want to get fit and healthy. When you’ve got it, write it down because this is your ‘why’. You may be motived by your health or you may not like your appearance. Maybe you want to feel comfortable in your own skin? Deep down, everyone has a motivator within them for getting fit and staying healthy.
  2. Goals. It’s been drummed into you since you were a kid and when it comes to your fitness the message is the same. Get a list of concise goals that you wish to achieve from your workout efforts. Make sure you have a selection of short, mid and long-term goals and write them down, then stick them somewhere you can refer to them often.
  3. Hello friend. Everyone needs a friend, especially someone on a fitness mission. A workout buddy will not only keep you motivated, they will reduce the number of workouts you miss because you are feeling too tired or can’t be bothered. The best work out buddy shares a similar fitness goal and will motivate you when you need it most. If you can’t find a buddy, the right gym and trainer will provide support and experience to fast track you to your goals pronto.
  4. Food is fuel. When training towards a fitness goal, nutrition is of the upmost importance to ensure your body has the fuel it needs. Getting fit is 80 per cent nutrition and 20 per cent exercise, so next time you feel tempted to embark on a fad diet or skip a meal remember you cannot out-train a bad diet. Feed your body a balanced diet and it will reward you with great muscle tone, vitality and glowing skin.
