What to do in the rain
08 May 2017
We came across some holiday makers with a teenage child eating Sushi at Sushi and Izakaya at Chevron Renaissance the other day (not unusual in itself) except they were deeply contemplating what to do with themselves that day. The young boy did not look overjoyed to be hitting the town! It occurred to us that many interstate visitors travel to our region to enjoy the surf, sand and beach holiday vibe. However when the weather turns a bit on the unfriendly side, it may not be quite so obvious how to fill your joyous holiday time.
Here are our suggestions for families visiting the Gold Coast on cold or rainy days:
Grab a raincoat and brave the weather. There is nothing quite like a long walk on the beach when nobody else is about. The sea takes a different tone in cold and rain, and its lovely. Our other favourite is to walk in the rainforest. Head to Binna Burra, Springbrook, Tamborine or O-Reilly’s for astoundingly beautiful walks. (Just DO NOT stray off the marked paths and if in doubt, do not forge ahead - turn around and go back.)
Visit Sea World
Many people forsake their theme park activities in the rain. Once again some of our best visits to Sea World have been when the weather is not so sunny. It’s cooler to walk around the exhibits. There are less people. For some reason, it feels a bit more relaxed and you can just take your time watching the penguins play or the seals be naughty. Some rides may not operate in heavy rain, but there is so much else to see that we really don’t mind.
Shop up a storm
Of course, who can deny a great shopping trip. The coast has so many great shopping centres to choose from. Ours of course! But further afield visit Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Robina Town Centre, and Harbourtown. All of these have cinemas as well, which will keep the kids entertained for an hour or two.
Check out what’s on at HOTA - Home of the Arts.
The centre is alive with a bustling community of theatre goers, artists and more. From life drawing to theatre workshops, there is always something happening. You can see what’s on by visiting the HOTA website.
Visit the markets
Probably the most popular markets around town are the Surfers Paradise beachfront markets. On the weekend, visit the bustling Village markets. And if you like organic food, try Miami Organic markets.
Try our vibrant street food culture
This is great fun. Take the kids to Miami Marketta. There are plenty of delicious meal choices. It’s so much fun to decide which to eat. Also live music and a super relaxed atmosphere.
Have a game of indoor bowls and laser tag
Strike Indoor bowls is located in Cavill Ave, not far from Chevron Renaissance. Head back to Chevron afterwards for a Betty’s Burgers session! Yum!
Try an art class
Artable at Robina run one day classes and regular workshops as well. Gold Coast Arts Centre also run one day workshops and sessions.
Go for a trail ride or fossick for thunder eggs
Take a drive to Thunderbird Park and try their adventure course, dig for thunder eggs, play mini golf and go for a trail ride. It’s loads of fun, and with a small coffee shop, you can put your feet up and relax for a few hours!
There is plenty to do around our town. Just never forget to spend some time with a nice warm beverage or a bowl of melted chocolate and just enjoy each other’s company!
